Thesis Statement

Since I am the only one yet to post, I guess there's limited options for a thesis statement.

Thesis that I came up with:

Through the symbolism of fog, the letter X, and shades, Zamyatin shows the omnipresence of secrecy, and expresses that no one can get rid of privacy, because it will always manifest itself in some way, shape, or form.

If anyone has any comments on improving the thesis, feel free to post them, especially if another symbol would be better than the ones listed.

Structure and Figures of Speech (My Other Two)

I tied these two together because they relate to each other.

Structure
At first the structure is rigid and precise in the use of words, sentences, etc. However, as the book progresses, the style of D-503's entries becomes more of a flowing stream of consciousness than the orderly way he had it before. He also uses many more...

Figures of Speech

Many of the figures of speech D-503 ends up using is either related to other people he knows and their facial features (O's rosy crescent mouth and I's triangular eyebrows [Note that there is still geometry present]) or nature, such as his recurring thoughts about the birds.

Symbols

Here is a preliminary list of the different symbols I have found:

Fog- seems to represent privacy and mystery
D-503 expresses that he likes the fog, but also is afriad of it

Hands- D-503's hands symbolize savagery and "primitive" life
D-503 hates his hands, but uses them to express his savage side

Birds- represent D-503's (and others') struggle to escape
D-503 makes numerous references to birds trying to break through the wall
(May also be an allusion to the classic "bird running into the window" joke)

X- seems to represent the unknown (x is a variable in mathematics)
D-503 keeps seeing this X factor in I-330

D-503 also mentions X as one of the axes of a coordinate grid (along with Y and Z), which may symbolize that he is trying to find his (metaphorical) location, but cannot because he only has one coordinate
